Tell Michael & His Mother

We were called to war one day,
To fight for Uncle Sam.
That is how I chanced to meet
A Buddy brave and grand.

We fought together side by side,
Each knew the others thoughts.
We saw our buddies as they died,
in battles as we fought.

My Buddy was the next to fall,
I knelt down at his side.
These were the words as I recall,
He said before he died:

"If you get home, please tell my wife,
and little Michael dear,
That daddy said that their blue eyes
were never meant for tears.
Tell Michael, and his mother, too,
I'll not be coming home,
That I'll be watching from above,
from on the Golden Throne.
And tell them I said not to cry
As time goes by in years,
I loved them both, and their blue eyes
Were never meant for tears."

I told his wife, when I returned.
She took it very brave.
The years have passed, and now at last,
Buddy's coming home to his grave.

The Flag's been flying at half-mast,
upon that lonely ship.
The ship that's sailing 'cross the foam,
bringing Michaels daddy home.

That cold gray ship has come at last,
the air is filled with gloom.
The Flag's still flying at half-mast,
it seems to share their doom.

For on that ship my Buddy lay,
A Soldier to this day.
And as we take him to his tomb,
it seems I hear him say:

"Tell Michael and his mother, too,
I'll not be coming home.
That I'll be watching from above,
from on the Golden Throne.
And tell them I said not to cry.
As time goes by in years,
I loved them both, and their blue eyes
Were never meant for tears."
